A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10 digit alphanumeric number with a purpose to link and track all transactions of any person with the department. This number is issued as a laminated card which is also used as an identity proof as it is issued by the Income Tax department, a Government of India authority.
In case you have lost or misplaced your old PAN card, damaged it then you need to apply for a duplicate one and the procedure goes almost the same as applying for a new PAN card.
Though it is not necessary but it is recommended to file an FIR at the nearest police station and get the copy of that report which you can submit with attached application form for reissue of PAN Card with NSDL or UTI PAN Card Centers.
You need to fill a form named, “Request for new PAN card or/and changes or correction in PAN data” with fees of Rs.96/- only. However if you are a NRI then this fee is Rs.994. This form is for obtaining for Duplicate PAN card as well as for changing data like correction of name, fathers name correction, change of address / address correction etc.
